  • Our world may be one giant hologram?

Admittedly, these people are talking all about theoretical mumbo jumbo, as the planck length has not yet been proven. However, it is fun for all those existentialists out there who are kept up wondering these ridiculous thoughts. Well here’s one more for you to ponder.

For many months, the GEO600 team-members had been scratching their heads over inexplicable noise that is plaguing their giant detector. Then, out of the blue, a researcher approached them with an explanation. In fact, he had even predicted the noise before he knew they were detecting it. According to Craig Hogan, a physicist at the Fermilab particle physics lab in Batavia, Illinois, GEO600 has stumbled upon the fundamental limit of space-time – the point where space-time stops behaving like the smooth continuum Einstein described and instead dissolves into “grains”, just as a newspaper photograph dissolves into dots as you zoom in. “It looks like GEO600 is being buffeted by the microscopic quantum convulsions of space-time,” says Hogan.

The idea that we live in a hologram probably sounds absurd, but it is a natural extension of our best understanding of black holes, and something with a pretty firm theoretical footing. It has also been surprisingly helpful for physicists wrestling with theories of how the universe works at its most fundamental level.

The holograms you find on credit cards and banknotes are etched on two-dimensional plastic films. When light bounces off them, it recreates the appearance of a 3D image. In the 1990s physicists Leonard Susskind and Nobel prizewinner Gerard ‘t Hooft suggested that the same principle might apply to the universe as a whole. Our everyday experience might itself be a holographic projection of physical processes that take place on a distant, 2D surface.

  • ReWalk Bionic Legs

I’m not sure why, but I am fascinated by advancements in technology to help the disabled. I’ve posted about prosthetic limbs that actually hooked up to the nerves, but now there is a new patent for bionic walking legs. The japanese have been working on something like this for a while, but I couldn’t find the original video. So here is a version you can understand.

  • Tasty Jams – The Muppets

This may seem kind of strange, seeing the Muppets listed under Tasty Jams, but then again it’s the Muppets and you’re probably all like, “Dude that’s so retro lol”. In any case, the Muppets have done some wonderfully creative musical numbers since Jim has passed. While I can’t attest to their regular material anymore, I think you will enjoy these clips. We start first with their epic take on Bohemian Rhapsody. See Manamana and Ode to Joy behind the jump.

I am very happy to have found this, and oh so delighted to say that I have ordered one. It can be found here, but right now they aren’t making anymore.

  • Vanishing Point

This is an awesome art project that I took my time debating whether or not to post. I was conflicted as to whether it would be well received. It is very abstract and is more of a visual guide to the music, using various simple shapes to just be visual eye candy. It starts a little slow, but give it a chance. I found it on a random japanese site, so I don’t know who to credit.

  • Tasty Jams – Turkey Cheese Fries

This isn’t good. You will probably call me to tell me how much you hated this song. I’m letting you know that’s OK. Because deep down, I know something. I know this song has destroyed you inside just a little. And at the end of the day, what more can I do?

  • Your WTF for the day – The Duplicators

Every couple of years Cartoon Network changes up it’s mascot to better suit the demography and their change in tastes. Toonami had a big update with their mascot, KND gave the CN logo a change, and Adult Swim even had at one point update to their black & white cue card setup from a bland pool backdrop. Well, here is their latest update in the face. All of this was done in CG using a program called Meinbender. For more absurdity, check out the rest of the 30 second spots at this link. It’s pretty crazy.

  • Trashed Idea – White Goat

A person in Japan has created an invention that turns shredded office paper into toilet paper. While the idea is obviously chock full of hilarity, this does seem like a semi-practical approach to recycling. I’m impressed.
